The US Oligarchy
In the broadest sense of the word, they are the peoples’ lobbyists. It’s clear that this quid pro quo relationship and the trust that underwrites it no longer exist. Although they control the destiny of the country, congress’ objectives aren’t driven by the universal principles that built and sustained the nation’s progress.
Government of the people, by the people and for the people has become little more than a cliché. This bedrock principle of representative government is being shunted aside by an insulated oligarchy. They stand above the law figuratively and literally. And so do their friends.
This is what allows the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, to publicly call illegal aliens “patriots.” This is what allows Senator Dodd to lie about his role in authorizing bonuses for AIG’s executives. This is what allows Charlie Rangel to cheat on his taxes and support giving welfare to freed Gitmo terrorists, and open Social Security to illegal aliens.
This is what allows Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Chuck Schumer to rail against AIG executives for unethical behavior while stuffing AIG contributions into their pockets. They have no fear of political retribution.
Congress has traded its integrity for wealth, power and insularity. In theory the tenure of these representatives is constrained by their approval ratings, which should determine the outcome of elections. Sometimes this works.
But today, money plays a greater role in the outcome of an election contest than an incumbent’s record. Wealth and party loyalty builds and sustains their membership in this elite body. They are aided by state laws, mutually written and endorsed by both political parties, which create legal (financial) obstacles for third party candidates.
And gerrymandering, the art of creating districts which divides and diffuses the opposition’s plurality, further insulates them from competition.
The Obama administration’s attempt to control the 2010 national census is about the consolidation of power. This effort is about preserving “safe seats” in Democratic states by padding the census numbers. There is no other reason for this blatant power grab. None!
The majority of Americans know the government can’t spend its way out of a recession and can’t borrow its way out of debt. Main Street is outraged by the wild spending in the stimulus and budget proposals.
And what have the voters been told? That the country will collapse unless congress creates a $9 trillion deficit. It’s clear that congress doesn’t care if the public accepts or rejects this fiscal lunacy. Passage of the legislation protects and preserves the new oligarchy.
It’s time for term limits.
